Kumite

Kumite, also known as sparring, is an important tool in martial arts. While it is important to learn concepts and techniques but it is also equally important to learn how to strike and be struck by an opponent in a controlled environment. Kumite allows the Taifu-Shoi practitioner to understand how to strike a live moving target that strikes back.

It allows you to apply the concepts you learned in class and it also allows the practitioner to come up with their own kumite techniques. Secondly, it prepares you mentally and psychologically to defend yourself because of learning how to take a hit. It helps alleviate the physical and mental stress of being in an outside environment with different variables in play.

Kata

Kata, also known as forms in other styles, help you develop the movements of the style and it helps you understand concepts of the style. So when you do a kata, you are in essence performing a version of shadow boxing but with an order to the movements with concepts behind them. Secondly, by doing katas, you are learning how to correctly position of your feet, hands and learning proper body structure.

Katas serve as a way of teaching the student how to breath with each movement and to channel their focus with each movement performed. This is our way of showing our students to concentrate on what they doing and why; it serves as a way to channel their energy in the proper way.
